New Cape Cod Flood Maps Project Greater Risk

An article in the Cape Cod Times today reports the results, and some thoughts, on the preliminary revisions of FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for some Cap Cod Communities. For anybody who has been following the issue anywhere along our nation’s coastlines, it’s not surprising to see that rates are expected to increase. It’s also not surprising to find differing opinions on the increases.

The cost of insurance depends on the property, said David Mendelsohn, FEMA’s map modernization program coordinator. . . . “Generally speaking it did not have a large impact on the Cape,” Mendelsohn said, noting that other areas in the nation saw much more drastic changes.

But for Gianetti and his neighbors the cost of insurance could prove prohibitive.

“I can’t afford it,” said Rosarina Hassan, who lives with her husband closer to Nantucket Sound than Gianetti.
